Travel Warning From Vesper

Submitted by Vivian_Fellows on September 30, 2013 at 1:39 AM CDT
City of Vesper

The following was received as a combined statement from both the Merchants' Association and Sea Trade Guild of Vesper.

Vesper merchants that seek to do business in southern Britannia are advised to avoid the Valorian Seas that surround the city of Jhelom. Pirates are seizing all cargo ships that traverse the region. Most are reported to be left burned and the crew stranded. At this time, protection can not be guaranteed to ships that choose to enter the area. Insurance companies are also choosing not to cover the region. Please be advised and note all warnings. Thank you.

Comment was sought from the governor of Vesper, Matthias O'Hare. He produced the following.

"As governor of the great city of Vesper, I humbly distance myself from the commerce guilds' statement. It is no secret that the city of Vesper suffers from a similar affliction of 'privateers'. We manage to carry on somehow and I am quite sure our merchants can handle themselves no matter where they be."

Congratulations to Dangling WORM for catching both winning lobsters! When Zox Greatsnapper isn’t teaching them to swim in her new aquarium, the lobsters are on display in the house next to the Britain Counselor Hall.

For the creepy-crawly, terrifying month of October, Zox would like a reaper fish. Reaper fish can be found in Doom. It must be caught between September 24th and October 24th. Please leave the fish in the mailbox by Thursday, October 24th at 11:59 p.m. CDT.

If your fish is not the heaviest, you may have it back, if you left a house rune to your mailbox with the fish.

Elections Finished! All Seats Filled!

Submitted by Vivian_Fellows on September 21, 2013 at 1:24 AM CDT

Citizens across Britannia have had their say. The second election has ended. Some races were close, others almost uncontested. As expected, the ones to watch were Britain, Skara Brae, Minoc, and New Magincia.

We'll start with the quieter races.

  • Jhelom - Alista Laleyan: Alista won re-election without much worry. Riding her popularity among the citizenry for navigating the rift with Skara Brae over slavers and pirates in the area, she handily triumphed. Competitors almost certainly didn't want her job of having to deal with Skara Brae.

  • Moonglow - Walter Tyrell: Moonglow was quiet as this election saw the prior governor not seek re-election. Without an incumbent, the people rallied around the sweet talker known as Mr. Tyrell. His goal to bring an arcane circle to the city bank was a winner.

  • Vesper - Matthias O'Hare: Another election where the sitting governor chose not to run for re-election. In the end it boiled down between two choices, Alatar, a representative of a local trading company and Matthias, the son of a former Lord. The citizenry chose a steady hand by electing the familiar family name of O'Hare who promised to try and rid the city of it's pirate infestation.

  • Yew - Willa of the Yew Wood: If you had told a Yewbie that Willa would run un-opposed for re-election, they would not have been surprised. Quite possibly the most popular governor in the land, no competition stepped up to challenge the Lady of the Yew Wood. Even so, she still campaigned as she sought to assure her fellow Yewbies that she would continue to seek improvements for the town.

The next several races were tight almost to the very end. They kept participants engaged all week as leads were traded, competitors dropped out, and votes were bought.

  • Minoc - Tanda: Another popular governor managed re-election as Tanda cruised to a victory over her only serious challenger in Izanami. Izanami ran a campaign arguing that a witch had no place being in charge of trade deals for such a rough and tumble town as Minoc. However, many in the northern highlands disagreed and decided to stick with the current governor and trusted associate of MOA. By the final day, the vote was not even close.

  • Skara Brae - Neptune: In the first major upset of the second election cycle, Neptune beat out the competition for Governor of Skara Brae. He unseated the former Governor Sirius in what was a close election. For the first few days, Sirius had a small lead and seemed poised for re-election. But, around mid-week the dynamics changed as the men and women of Skara Brae moved just enough to Neptune to flip the lead. From there, Neptune held out as his lead stood firm to the end.

  • Trinsic - Ra'Dian Fl'Gith: The dirtiest of any of the elections. The city of Honor saw it's name get drug through the mud. Another city where the former governor chose not to seek re-election. From the start, the lead switched several times a day between the two contestants, Ra'Dian Fl'Gith and Ching a Ling. With a small lead and only days remaining, the election campaign for Ching a Ling panicked and began paying for votes. While Ra'Dian did not approve a similar tactic, shadowy groups seeking to support the blue elf also started to provide payments for votes. When the clock struck midnight however, Ra'Dian's campaign had managed to 'earn' the most votes.

  • Britain - Dot Warner: Another surprising upset. With Governor Manx announcing he would not seek re-election, it was assumed Cire, the close runner-up from the first election cycle, would win in a cake walk. But the capitol city saw four contestants enter the race. While Ian Stonesoul and the Take Back Britannia Party organized some rallies and protests, his candidacy never got off the ground. It was the little known merchant warrior, Dot Warner, who would play the giant slayer. Promising to try and deliver a moongate closer to the West Britain Bank, she was able to capture enough votes to win the city.

  • New Magincia - Miss Kitty: The closest of the elections. Miss Kitty was seeking re-election and many assumed she would run un-opposed. Unfortunately for her campaign, the Guardians of Valhalla and their leader Thorreain thought otherwise. The two traded the lead several times before the final day, when Thorreain brilliantly lead voters to the polls after a fish net toss and rally. It seemed over as Thorrean's lead had grown to more than five percentage points, but in the final hours, voters poured out of the town houses to put Miss Kitty into the lead right before polls closed.
That wraps the second election cycle, and what an exciting cycle it was. Close races in several of the major cities kept the population constantly checking for pigeons carrying the latest news! Hopefully we can bring you interviews with a few of these winners over the coming months to help you get to know the current slate of governors better.

Citizens are encouraged to take part and contact their city governors. Candidate nominations for the third election cycle will not begin until December!

A Letter from the Governor of Britain

From the desk of the Governor of Britain, Countess Dot Warner:

Greetings to the Citizens of Britain!

As your newly elected governor, I wish to earnestly thank you for your support.  I pledge to earn your continued support on King Blackthorn’s Council by looking out for the needs of our fine city.

As your governor, I hope to see the City of Britain prosper and regain the cultural significance it once held before the discovery of other facets.  I believe each citizen can help make that a reality if they put their minds to it.  Britain can be great once again!

Dot WarnerTowards that end, I have already submitted a request to King Blackthorn for the addition of a permanent moongate just north of the First Bank of Britain to facilitate commerce.  Additionally, I have asked that the ‘East Side Park’ receive usability improvements for future festivities.

The materials for a governor’s office for city have been accepted by the Royal Builders and the building is on their schedule for future construction.

If you wish to contact me, you may do so via the bulletin board on the southern wall of Premier Gems, at the Britannian Consulate andMinistry of Foreign Affairs Luna Office in northern Luna (101o 41’N 26o 0’W), or at my estate just west of the Britain Moongate along the Serpent’s Spine mountains (33o 2’S 6o 15’W).

The first Trade Deal I have struck for the city is with the Guild of Arcane Arts (+5 SDI).  If you would like another deal in the future, please donate two million gold to the City Herald and state your preference for which guild on one of the bulletin boards.  This will be on a first come, first serve basis. Please donate generously.

Thank you,
Countess Dot Warner, Governor of Britain

(OOC FYI: City improvements are on hold until all of theGovernors’ offices are built)
